the Digirati’s fatigue - or “Why Vista hasn’t taken off.”

In the interest of being able to eat in the future, I find myself trying to carefully track the trends in computing. Who will I sell my services to in the future? Am I going to have to bite off the cost of development tools on Microsoft’s Vista platform? How do Those Who Decide feel about this new operating system?

It’s hard to discern who to watch when trying to predict the momentum of the entire industry. However, from my perspective, it would appear that everyone is feeling a bit sluggish due to the slowing economy and lack of innovation into any new directions.

So, I think Vista will have a shelf life comparable with Windows ME. There are people who almost fanatically despise the operating system, and beyond these hot heads (of which I have to admit to being sympathetic with) I cannot think of a single large business that has embraced the OS to the exclusion of their XP systems. No one has the money for the upgrades. No one has the time to wait for the driver support that is needed to keep business afloat.

Also, I can’t think of any specific examples of third party software that requires Vista (beyond a few video games).

All things considered, it would seem that the delta between features offered by Vista over XP fail to compel anyone to suffer the change.

So, I believe I’ll keep the idea in the back of my head. However, I’m not going to rush out to invest in the heavy development tools required by Vista. Just my opinion…
